Chapter 13

Gabe, where are you?

Kyra shook her head, willing the thought away. The fog began to clear and the noise around her sounded deafening. She didn’t know where Dellaire or any of Boss’s men went. She had a sneaking hunch no one else noticed Gaap fleeing through the back door of the stage.

Kyra tried to leap to her feet. Her motions proved slow and stiff. Still, she got there, and when she did, the fog cleared even more. She moved to follow the killer, shuffling along drunkenly. After a few strides, she walked more fluidly, then broke into a jog.

She reached the back door of the stage, leaving the chaos of the room behind, and pushed through it. It led to another tunnel. She glanced left and right in time to see Gaap disappear around the corner in the distance.

Breaking into a run, she followed. She pursued him through a series of passages that twisted and turned every which way. He kept mostly to enclosed tunnels with intact ceilings, though every so often she’d run past a wall or ceiling with a chunk of concrete missing, which let in the moonlight. It gave her some illumination to see by, rather than bolting through absolute darkness.

Kyra gave no thought to what direction they went or how she’d get back. Instead, she concentrated on keeping up with the killer. Each time she reached a turn, she’d peer slowly around the corner in barely enough time to keep Gaap in her line of sight. She then bolted down the passage to where he’d turned and start the process again.

Her head throbbed terribly from the blow Angra gave her. The stale air of the closed tunnels, mingled with the ever-present odors of urine, pot, and body sweat did nothing to help it.

Still, Kyra ran. She needed to catch this guy. Failing now might mean failing completely, which would be a death sentence for Manny.

After a time, she realized the passage she ran through sloped upward subtly. She didn’t consciously register an incline, but her calves began to burn like they did when she hiked uphill.

As she jogged, Kyra noticed spray paint in various places on the tunnel walls. It rose out of the dim light as she passed. At first, she paid it no mind. Then she noticed similarities in each instance. The word ALTAR, adorned the concrete every so often with an arrow painted below it pointing the direction she already ran.

Didn’t the Prowler she and Dellaire questioned said something about an altar? He even mentioned directions with arrows, didn’t he? This must be what he’d referred to. Perhaps Gaap was heading toward this Altar place.

Kyra wondered what she’d find there, and what kind of danger she faced. She couldn’t afford to dwell on it, and yet the fear distracted her from her burning calves and lungs, so she embraced it.

She came around a particular turn and saw the killer’s bushy wig disappearing up ahead to the left. When she reached the turn, slowly leaning out to peer around it, she again saw him vanishing in the distance.
